Heidelberg.ai Seminar

17.12.2025

We’re excited to welcome Tobias Fischer, Senior Lecturer and ARC DECRA Fellow at QUT (Queensland University of Technology), to our joint heidelberg.ai / NCT Data Science Seminar series.

In this talk, he will dive into the world of brain-inspired autonomous navigation, exploring how biological brains localize themselves so efficiently - without GPS. From energy-efficient perception to underwater navigation for reef restoration, bio-inspired computing is reshaping how robots understand and interact with their environments.

Tobias will present cutting-edge research in Visual Place Recognition (VPR), showing how event-based cameras and spiking neural networks enable ultra-low-power, high-precision localization, including applications in underwater robotics. He will also introduce Pixi, a versatile tool for running robotics and AI libraries seamlessly across platforms.
