Another highlight of the ELLIS AI in Life Seminar Series Heidelberg before we close out 2026: Andrea Ganna (FIMM, University of Helsinki).

He will show how foundation models trained on nationwide health data can be combined with genomic information to predict disease trajectories, improve biomarker discovery and causal inference, and explore both the potential and limitations of these approaches.

The third “European AI for Fundamental Physics Conference” (EuCAIFCon) is being held in Heidelberg, from 24th to 28th of August 2026!
The aim of this event is to provide a platform for establishing new connections between AI activities across various branches of fundamental physics, by bringing together researchers that face similar challenges and/or use similar AI solutions. The conference will be organized “horizontally”: sessions are centered on specific AI methods and themes, while being cross-disciplinary regarding the scientific questions.

Our new ELLIS AI in Life Seminar Series Heidelberg is in full swing with the 3rd talk within the first month presented by Rajesh Ranganath (NYU)!

His talk will focus on clinical risk scores, causality & competing events with autoregressive transformers:

With the successful renewal of the ELLIS Unit Heidelberg, the Central Institute of Mental Health (CIMH) is now formally included as a contributing partner, further strengthening the Unit’s interdisciplinary profile.

The Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics (MPIK) is now part of the renewed ELLIS Unit Heidelberg, reinforcing the Unit’s strength in fundamental and data-intensive research.

Our ELLIS Unit has been successfully extended following the recent ELLIS-wide evaluation, joining 25 Units across Europe that continue to meet the network’s high standards of scientific excellence and collaboration.
